A mid-century courtyard house above Coldwater Canyon

Set into the hillside above Coldwater Canyon, Valea Estate is a single-storey mid-century house that has been restored rather than reinvented. Walnut ceilings run from the entry through to the kitchen, glass walls fold back onto a limestone terrace, and a long pool sits against a hillside planted with agave and cactus. The living room steps down to a fireplace; the dining table looks straight out at the palms. Evening is the hour the house was built for, when the water lights come up and the whole plan reads as one connected room. A theatre, gym and sport court sit below, and the two-night minimum makes it one of the few houses of this calibre available for a long weekend.
